Abbotsford in Action
Abbotsford offers vibrant community centres, inclusive green neighbourhoods, cultural heritage plus natural beauty, affordable living and convenient transportation. But this is only the beginning. It’s our vision for the future that gets us really excited.
We see opportunity where others don’t, and we don’t need a crystal ball to do so. Plans to turn blueprints into footprints and artists’ renderings into brick and mortar are underway. Current urban developments include a new civic precinct and courthouse, a sports complex, widened highways and expansion of the university district. Abbotsford has broad horizons, and endless possibilities. Be part of the next story.
Our temperate climate, multi-cultural city and clean environment provide a quality of life that draws skilled creative people from around the world. Recruiting and retaining prime talent offers a key competitive advantage. Skilled labour and service workers top the occupations of our young, educated workforce.
Our university, UFV, was awarded A grades for education quality, student-faculty interface and registration process.
We have a spectacular physical setting, a fertile valley surrounded by mountains. The area is rich in parkland, trails and sports fields since west-coasters like to stay fit and active. About 84% of our residents live within 500 metres of a park. About 65% of us live and work within the city itself – with an average commute under 10 minutes, not even enough time for our morning coffee to get cold.

Our population has increased more than 50% in the past 20 years and is expected to increase another 67% in the next 20 years. The community has proactive initiatives to provide for this boom. The GP4 Me initiative is funded by the doctors and government of BC. This program ensures that patients find a family doctor, strengthens the doctor-patient relationship and supports the health care system’s capacity.
BC’s healthcare out-did itself with the 2008 opening of the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre (ARHCC). The hospital includes acute care, operated by Fraser Health. Its cancer facility is operated by the globally renowned BC Cancer Agency. ARHCC is Canada’s first new hospital to meet LEED Gold environmental standards. Energy efficient, it consumes 40% less energy than other hospitals. It also boasts being the city’s biggest employer.
Abbotsford enjoys rich, lively cultural diversity and a strong sense of community. People from all over the world have come to live and work here. Our rich ethnic mix creates a lively cultural experience – in the arts, entertainment, cuisine and commercial activity.
